Experience
Brian O’ Shea has in excess of 25 years in the energy industry which extends from pre market open to present day.
During this period his experience spans across all aspects of Energy Sector from Gas & Electricity Trading, Regulation and Route to Market solutions, not only in the Irish market but also in Great Britain and across Europe as well as experience across acquisitions and integration of same This hands on experience is unique within Energy sector as it extends from Strategy development to operational implementation and performance reporting to ensure success over the long term.
Brian is and has always being a supporter of market competition and dynamics throughout his career. Prior to regulatory oversight Brian was instrumental in the development of market opening rules in the Gas industry this included, not only market rules design but also customer tariffs to facilitate competition, the development of wholesale trading market to further support market opening with all of these initiatives remaining in place to this day.
Brian led the establishment of the Trading function in Bord Gais initially trading gas in the GB market through the first gas interconnector but expanding to include electricity trading on the entry as an electricity supplier.
To support trading activities detailed Hedging Strategies were developed to both support the Retail function but also adding trading value, this included putting in place contractual arrangements to larger users all of which resulted in both increased competitiveness and profitability
The Trading function not only supported Retail activities but it also had its own commercial mandate to which Brian was instrumental in developing market leading contractual arrangements this included commercializing the only gas storage facility in Ireland, complex, long term offtake arrangements with indigenous gas fields both in Ireland and North Sea, Tolling Agreements and Contract for Difference (CfDs) with Gas Generators and Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with renewable generators.
In 2012 Brian was part of the Senior Management team tasked with selling Bord Gais which resulted in sale to Centrica plc in 2014. To enable the successful sale and transfer to Centrica this required the re-establishment of the Trading Business and the successful renegotiation of trading contracts within a 6 month time frame.
Subsequent to the sale Brian presented long term strategies and contracts to the Board of Centrica. He now sits on the Advisory Board to ESB Networks and is currently Chairperson of Behing the meter storage in Energy Storage Ireland. An avid supporter of hurling will be found on the side of the pitch most weekends. Brian collaborates with many other experts in different areas of specialty from project development, funding both in Ireland but also across the European market.
